KB #240112: Installing SQL Server Management Objects (SMO)

The Encryptionizer Column Encryption Manager GUI (Col-E) requires SQL Server Management Objects (SMO). Instructions for installing are shown below.

Additional Information:

If you will using the Col-E GUI, download and run the installers for SQL Server Management Objects (SMO). SQL SMO is required by the Col-E GUI to communicate with SQL in order to configure Column Encryption.

Installation Instructions

  1. Download the streamlined installer for SMO from the NetLib website
  2. Run the downloaded program: setup_KB240112 (SMO).exe
  3. Install CLR Types for Microsoft SQL Server
  4. Install SQL Server Shared Management Objects

Reboot is not required. Note that even though these downloads may mention SQL Server 2014, they support SQL 2005 and later.

NOTE: You do not need to install SQL SMO if you are using Whole Database Encryption, even if you plan on using the Encryptionizer SQL API’s.
