KB #240157: How to transfer an Encryptionizer Distribution license from one machine to another (v2201.1.0 and later)

⏱️ 5 min read

Type:

Information

Summary:

You are upgrading or otherwise need to migrate an installation of Encryptionizer to another machine. You are allowed to transfer installations for licenses under a current support agreement only. These instructions pertain only to the Distribution License version of Encryptionizer.

Additional Information:

These instructions are specific to Encryptionizer version 2201.1.1 and later, as this version uses a different license activation method from previous versions.

If you have Encryptionizer 2201.1.1 or later installed, the version number of the primary Encryptionizer driver (NLEMSYS.SYS) is 2201.611.55 or higher.

To detemine the driver version installed, please see this KnowledgeBase article:

If you have an earlier version on your original machine, we recommend that you install Encryptionizer versions 2201.1.1 and later on the new machine, as support for activating previous versions of the software on new machines has been discontinued as of Jan 1, 2024. If you require assistance, please contact NetLib Support.

First set up the new machine and move your databases:

  1. We recommend to always install the latest version of software available. You can download the latest version of Encryptionizer from your License Portal.
  2. Install Encryptionizer to the new machine using a Temporary License. Your License Portal typically has at least one Temporary License good for 45 days available for use. A Temporary License can used on any machine.  A longer term Temporary License is available by request from NetLib Support.
  3. If you need a new Temporary License, a longer period of time for the Temporary License, or reminder of where you can download the latest software, please contact NetLib Support.
  4. Configure the software and databases on the new machine (see below on Moving your database(s) to the new server). Make sure that all databases are accessible, and troubleshoot if there are any issues before deactivating the old machine.

Next you will move the license from the old machine to the new machine:
If the software on the original machine is older than Encryptionizer version 2201.1.1 (NLEMSYS.SYS earlier than 2201.611.55)

  • Inform NetLib Support of the old machine serial number and machine name, and we will deactivate the registration in our records.
  • On the new machine, open nllicense4.exe found in the NetLib installation directory (defined by your installation procedure).
  • Choose Update and then Replace to replace the Temporary License with the perpetual permanent license. You can find this information in your License portal.

If the software on the original machine is version 2201.1.1 or newer (NLEMSYS.SYS versio 2201.611.55 or later)

  • On your original machine, open nllicense4.exe found in the NetLib installation directory (defined by your installation procedure).
  • Choose Deactivate. Follow the instructions so that you may reclaim an activation (see the License Management Guide for more information and instructions). Once deactivated, Encryptionizer will no longer function on the old machine, and the activation will be available to use on the new machine.
  • If you need the old machine to continue running concurrently, you can activate it with a Temporary License. If you need machines to run concurrently for a longer period of time, please contact NetLib Support.
  • On the new machine, open License Management screen from the Main Menu.
  • Choose Update and then Replace to replace the Temporary License with the perpetual permanent license. Use the same License ID and Activation password from the original machine. You can find this information in your License portal.

At anytime, you can view your active installations for each of your licenses on your License Portal.

If you need to extend the period that a Temporary License is running, you can replace the Temporary License with new one, or contact support who can extend the Temp License you are using. Make sure to Refresh the license after you have received notification that it has been extended.

To Move your database(s) or files to the new server:
  1. Activate your Encryptionizer Software on the new server , as described above.
  2. Secure the SQL instance using CLI (bldcmd) or your installation script on the new machine to set up the encryption key profile which will allow a secured service or application to read the encrypted files. The encryption keys set up for the original machine should match those entered in the new machine. If you are using a scripted configuration, you can run the part of the script which secures the SQL instance with the same key.
  3. Restart the secured service or application on the new machine to load the new Encryption key profile
  4. Once the secured service or application has restarted, you should be able to use/attach the encrypted database files or restore the encrypted backup copied from the original server. No need to decrypt your original database or backup.

Encryptionizer installations can be moved from one machine to another provided the license is covered by a current support agreement. Licenses no longer covered by a support agreement can run perpetually on the machine on which they are installed when support expired, but are not eligible to be moved to new machines or virtual environments. If you need to move an installation that is no longer covered by a current support agreement, please contact NetLib Support
