Summary:

You have received an error message “Could not secure this instance of SQL Server. Function return code: 2” when using a license for a less advanced edition of SQL to secure a higher level SQL instance.

Additional Information:

Encryptionizer is licensed based upon SQL Edition (Express, Personal, Workgroup, Standard, Enterprise). When using the Admin Wizard to secure a SQL instance, you will receive this error when trying to secure a SQL instance that is a more advanced Edition of SQL than the one for which you are licensed:

Could not secure this instance of SQL Server.
Function return code: 2
Could not find EXE

e.g., you have purchased Encryptionizer for SQL Express but you are trying to secure an instance of SQL Enterprise.

Encryptionizer for SQL Express:
SQL Express.

Encryptionizer for SQL Standard can be used to secure:
– versions already covered by Encryptionizer for SQL Express, plus
– SQL Standard, SQL Workgroup

Encryptionizer for SQL Enterprise can be used to secure:
– all editions of SQL Server.
